Roll up! Roll up! On in around half an hour is Elem Klimov’s devastating war classic Come and See. Come and See is an exceptionally intriguing film when it comes to the subject of war. Eschewing traditional realism, Klimov opts for a blend of underlying surrealism, poetics and psychological themes to pose existential questions of wartime. The film takes as its cue the Nazi occupation of Belarus and centres on our main character Flyora as he joins the Belarussian resistance movement. Thereafter we traverse the Eastern European landscape as horrors unfold.
